Reinventing urban retail: successful examples from URW in Europe

The new urban life? An open, participative, mixed city where nature takes back its place and commerce rediscovers its social role: to create bonds, encourage exchanges, and bring neighborhoods to life. Since 2002, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield and Saguez & Partners have envisioned 38 projects over 23 years of collaboration. Here’s a focus on 7 European achievements that embody this shared vision.

THE MOST ARTY

Glòries

Barcelona, Spain

Saguez & Partners, in collaboration with architect L35, completely redesigned Westfield Glòries to create a living tribute to Gaudí’s art and Barcelona’s creative spirit. New benches, canopies, pergolas, and five works by Javier Mariscal punctuate this open-air artistic journey. The center also hosts El Mercat, the Group’s first Fresh! concept: a gourmet market blending local and international flavors.

THE MOST HISTORIC

Parly 2

Versailles, France

Opened in 1969, Parly 2 is the first French shopping center, born from the inspiration of the sixties’ American Way of Life. Since then, it has continuously evolved: a first extension in 1980, renovation of the historic mall in 2012, then in 2017, a major rehabilitation of the extension with the creation of a new connecting mall. A pioneering and timeless place. [Discover the project (https://saguez-and-partners.com/en/projets/parly-2).

THE MOST TRENDY

Mall of Scandinavia

Stockholm, Sweden

Just steps from a train station and a stadium, Mall of Scandinavia impresses with its volumes and the length of its malls. In 2015, Saguez & Partners, together with architect Gert Wingardh, created a dynamic and unique interior design. Four European artists enriched the project: Piotr Zuraw, Judith Seng, Scabetti, and Am-Mainz. Named "Best International Shopping Center" in 2016 by Retail & Leisure International. Area: 105,500 m².

THE LONGEST CONSTRUCTION SITE

Forum des Halles

Paris, France

The Forum des Halles now hosts 150 stores across 75,000 m². Around 750,000 passengers pass through the Châtelet-les-Halles hub daily. The site has continually evolved. 2002, the parking lots | 2007, Paris City Hall competition | 2016, opening of the Canopée | 2018, new metro connections | 2021, rehabilitation of the "Forum Chemetov" and "rue de la Boucle." 300 stores spread over more than 100,000 m², including a new 42,000 m² extension inaugurated in October 2017 after three years of construction. Bright design by Studio Drift and Lasvit. Designed as a true "Festival Palace", this concept by Saguez & Partners is arguably the most spectacular of URW’s projects. Fun fact: even Marion Cotillard posted about it on Instagram.

THE LARGEST CANOPY

Wroclavia

Wroclaw, Poland

Here’s the translation:
