SNCF

TGV Océane Paris-Bordeaux

2h04 of useful design In the summer of 2017, users of the TGV high-speed line were able to experience, alone, in pairs or as a tribe, according to their desires, real moments of life on the train: working, dining, relaxing or resting. After 5 years of reflection on designing the useful with the agency Saguez & Partners and 4 years of project with the manufacturer Alstom, SNCF inaugurated the 3rd generation of TGV which concentrates the design of all the details. Starting from the passenger’s seat, the global design agency has rethought the design of the various routes to provide new functionalities, comfort and fluidity.

From a place of transport to a place of comfort

By associating transportation with multiple activities, the train becomes in turn office, restaurant, leisure space and meeting place. Whether traveling for business or pleasure, alone or with the family, from the youngest to the oldest, SNCF caters for every profile and every generation. From the seat, redesigned for the multiple uses of all passengers, to the different courses, from the luggage area to the restaurant car, the overall design optimizes every moment of a more efficient, more comfortable, more responsible journey.

A unique 1st class seat for multiple uses

Inspired by the Voltaire armchair, with two large earpieces to support the upper body and head, the TGV Océane seat is designed like an alcove. The optimized volume is better suited to the new, higher average passenger height, thanks to wider armrests and an adjustable seat tilt increased by 10%, leaving more legroom. In the age of the nomadic office, the agency has equipped each seat with all the tools required for new ways of working:

  • Individual USB and 220 V sockets
  • Computer desk and reading light
  • Mini-tablet for smart-phone
  • Vanity mirror
  • Coat hook

The elegance of the materials used for the seats in both classes – pure wool mesh for the seat, leather for the headrest and armrests, light oak wood for the tray table – is complemented by a technical prowess that provides a double benefit of comfort and health in 1st class, where all the swivel seats will be turned in the direction of travel on every journey.

Soft light for every moment of the day

Double-source LED lighting, direct and indirect, warm and cool, designed by Saguez & Partners to provide passengers with a light that changes from morning to evening.. In the bar car and 2nd class, French designer Ionna Vautrin has created a lamp that balances organic surfaces and geometric lines.

Move better

The design of the TGV Océane fluidifies movement inside the train by optimizing its various functionalities, such as the luggage area, dynamic signage and circulation handles that facilitate access for children, senior citizens and people with reduced mobility. The bar car offers possibilities for a variety of postures. The light oak wood counter, totally open and magnified by a red canopy, is more welcoming.

A more responsible way of life

SNCF and Saguez & Partners worked on the efficiency and sustainability of the new design, putting themselves not only in the shoes of users, but also in those of agents. Operating, maintenance and cleaning criteria were key factors in the choice of lighting treatments, colorimetry and materials, such as the new, more easy-to-care-for seat fabrics, featuring red stripes in 1st class and blue stripes in 2nd class, in homage to Roger Tallon, designer of the second-generation TGV Atlantique.
